Travertine is a form of natural sedimentary rock. This rock has a crystalline texture and is formed as a result of the precipitation of carbonate minerals from the water of surface or geothermal springs.
This happens where water comes close to magma at some depths. As water travels and heats up, it absorbs minerals and soluble solids. As the water cools, the minerals precipitate again.
The main constituent of travertine is calcite, which is a type of limestone. The main color of travertine is white but the color could be anywhere from white, cream, brown, bronze, or caramel to yellow, red, or gray.
Typically, crystallized minerals are calcium-based. The various impurities in the sediment help to the color and role of the rock. One of the main attractions of this rock is the unique design of each rock that is because of the random distribution of colors.
One of the most well-known travertine mines is located in Mahallat city of Markazi province. As a center of rock production, this city has produced 50% of the total travertine mineral of Iran and the optimal capacity of Mahallat in the production of marble, porcelain, Christian, Traonyx, and tramite (raw rock and travertine) placed Iran in the rank 9 of decorative rock producing countries among the 18 countries producing travertine.
Travertine is extracted from the mine in blocks and then transported to the factory for cutting operations. After the rock is cut, the rock is ready for further processing and polishing. Depending on the intended use of the rocks, their cut and size are different. The surface of the Travertine is pitted with tiny, irregular holes because the rock is deposited in an aquatic environment. These cavities are often filled with epoxy, cement, and paint but if its uneven surface is not a problem for the buyer, it can be used in its natural state.
Two or three small travertine mines exist in the western United States. These mines have low production and the quality of the rock is evaluated usually poor. A decade ago, Italy was the exclusive market of travertine rock. Today, Italy is still a leader in this field, but many countries such as Iran, Turkey, Mexico, and Peru have joined this market.
